Sydney Mines Heritage Museum & Cape Breton Fossil Centre

Sydney Mines Heritage Museum & Fossil Centre in Sydney Mines on Cape Breton Island focuses on the history and heritage of the town of Sydney Mines 200 year history of steel making and coal mining and transportation.  Our restored 1905 train station houses historical artifacts from the community which represents life in Sydney Mines during the coal mining era.

Explore the Cape Breton Fossil Centre which has the largest Carboniferous Plan Fossil display in Canada, in not North America.  We have over 800 plan fossils on display, as well as a display area, lab, classroom and boardroom. We offer daily tours of our display area and two outside tours per week along the cliffs in the Sydney Coal Field.

Enjoy stories from our guides or go on your own fossil hike and explore the coastline to find your own hidden treasure. Bus tours are welcome.
